How Valuable is ISO 14000 Compliance?

Under EPA's noncompliance reporting policy, the discovery and self reporting of a violation by a corporate compliance program or an audit will justify the mitigation of penalties. Likewise, under the federal sentencing guidelines, an organization convicted of a crime is entitled to a reduced penalty if it can show the court that it had an effective compliance program in effect at the time of the violation.

Wisconsin's EPA has a three-tier model of fines for criminal and civil penalties, in which the lowest fines are imposed on companies that are ISO 14000 registered.
